Shanghai universities took part in nationwide mourning on Saturday for martyrs in epidemic fight and those who died of the coronavirus.

National flags were at half-mast on campuses, and some also turned their websites and social media homepages black-and-while.

At East China Normal University, air raid sirens wailed from 10am to 10:03am on its campuses in Putuo and Minhang districts.

At the Songjiang campus of Shanghai International Studies University, a national flag raising and mourning ceremony was attended by faculty and students on campus as well as anti-virus volunteers. They observed three-minute silence and laid flowers.

Students at home around the country also mourned.

Zhang Qiaochu, a Wuhan native, said: “I have witnessed the outbreak in this city. I will pay my respects not only to all the martyrs and deceased victims, but also other patients, all the medical staff and community workers. Wuhan cannot pull through and we cannot live securely now without all their efforts. I will also do my part, either as a translator or a volunteer, to fight the virus too.”

At Fudan University, students sent letters from home to pay tribute to martyrs and victims.

“At 10am, the city of Wuhan is quiet except for the air raid siren,” wrote Qi Zhenxi, a Fudan student who is a Wuhan native. “We are lowering our heads now for the martyrs and victims, but we will not lower our heads in front of hardships. We will remember all the martyrs and deceased compatriots in our hearts as they will give us strength, courage and confidence to go on.”
